PLANNING

DSP&R is currently working in conjunction with the City of Sherman, TxDOT, and private donors on the implementation of a new streetscape design for the Courthouse Square and Houston and Lamar Streets. The improvements will include new pedestrian islands at intersections, canopy trees and new street furniture, and select sidewalk and curb repair. “The implementation of the landscape islands will make a significant visual impact on a couple of downtown’s main thoroughfares,” said David Baca of David Baca Studio, the organization’s planning agent. “We are very excited about the impact this historic initiative will have on our downtown.”

Implementation of the plan is scheduled to begin in Spring 2012!

Draft of Proposed Ordinance

The DSP&R Planning Committee has been in development of a character based ordinance for the Downtown Sherman neighborhood. The draft is based on research by the Congress for the New Urbanism’s Smart Code as well as other city ordinances and guidelines. The ordinance is still in the preliminary stages of development, and DSP&R hopes to get lots of community feedback and input on this important project.
